The Waterloo Biofilter system is a compact, reliable and low maintenance septic system, fully approved in Ontario for both Class 4 Secondary and Tertiary residential systems and by the MOE for large flows with subsurface or surface discharge.  While conventional septic systems use a tile bed to treat and dispose of septic tank effluent, the Waterloo Biofilter system uses a highly efficient, patented filter medium to provide a consistent and high level of treatment making disposal in the soil easy.  This system is especially effective for difficult sites such as small lots, heavy clay soils, shallow or exposed bedrock, and high water table.

  ::  Features & Advantages

  Low Maintenance: The non-biodegradable filter medium normally does not require cleaning or changing (expected life span is 20-30 years).     Small Footprint: Effective treatment in an area 5-10 times smaller that that of sand, soil, or peat beds; and 10-50 times smaller with recirculation or deeper beds, especially useful for larger systems.
  Low Energy: Small intermittent pump is the only energy requirement.     Bedrock, clay, swamp, small lot: Our small Biofilter and new disposal means can be placed virtually anywhere.
  Recoverable: Easy to recover if the septic tank fails, unlike sand filters or conventional tile beds.     No aerobic sludge production: Our unique aerobic-anoxic trickle filter process produces no aerobic sludge to pump out.
  Various Configurations: The versatility of the Biofilter minimizes tree cutting and excavation: it will fit your requirements, not the opposite.     High hydraulic loading: The Biofilter has no hydraulic limitations - will not plug or flood by infiltration caused by groundwater or leaky toilets, unlike sand, soil, or peat.
  Fully Scalable: Sizes range from 1m3/day to 350m3/day, or more.     Re-useable: Biofilter effluent is being re-used for toilets, laundry, baths, gardening, and irrigation - no one else does that!
  Arctic of Caribbean: Developed and operated with Canada's winter in mind.     Attractive and Concealed designs: No unsightly mounds in your front or back yard.  Out of sight in a below ground tank or housed in an attractive cedar or vinyl shed.

The Waterloo Biofilter Area Bed consists of a 10" layer of sand, sized according to daily water use and soil conditions, with a small bed of stone on the sand for distribution.  It is much smaller than the conventional tile bed and may be placed directly on top of bedrock, heavy clay, or a high water table.  For a standard 3-4 bedroom house, the Area Bed ranges between 5 x 5 m (15 ft x 15 ft) and 11 x 11 m (36 ft x 36 ft). depending on soil type.  In 1995-1996, Waterloo Biofilter Systems Inc. tested the effectiveness of the Area Bed and subsequently  the Ontario Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing incorporated it in the regulations.

The Waterloo Biofilter Shallow Pressure Trench consists of a shallow drain field that is pressure-dosed at regular intervals.  For a standard 3-4 bedroom house, the trench length ranges between 30 m (100 feet) and 50 m (165 feet) and may be installed as one length or several.  This method is versatile because the trench can follow an irregular pattern around trees, for example, or can be squeezed between a driveway and a property line on a small lot.  Waterloo Biofilter Systems Inc. was first in introducing the Shallow Pressure Trench to Ontario in 1993.  Our proprietary trench design is perfectly adapted to our climate and avoids the plugging problems of other designs.
